Author Bio:

Russell K. Schutt, PhD, is professor and chair of sociology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston and lecturer on sociology in the department of psychiatry at the Harvard Medical Center. He received his BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago and was a postdoctoral fellow in the NIMH-funded Sociology of Social Control program at Yale University. In addition to "Investigating the Social World: The Process and Practice of Research "(SAGE), his books include "Homelessness, Housing, and Mental Illness "(Harvard University Press)" "and" Organization in a Changing Environment" (SUNY Press). Dr. Schutt s peer-reviewed publications range in focus from the effect of social context on cognition, satisfaction, and functioning to the service preferences of homeless persons and service personnel and the social factors in legal decisions. His research, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Veterans Administration, and state and local agencies, has included a randomized trial of housing options for homeless mentally ill persons, a randomized trial of a peer support program for dually diagnosed veterans, an evaluation of a state-level comprehensive care program, an evaluation of a youth violence reduction program, and a test of a program to improve community health workers knowledge of cancer clinical trials. He is a past recipient of the University of Massachusetts, and Boston Chancellor s Award for Distinguished Service.
